The journals of national period societies and the tranactions of local historical and archaeological groups play a key role in publishing archaeological reports. In many cases, they represent the only record of archaeological excavations and discoveries from the time of antiquarian exploration right up to the present. As the nature of publication changes and archaeology takes advantage of the opportunities afforded by electronic dissemination, many journals have begun to explore new possibilities, such as digital versions of journals in parallel to more traditional annual printed editions.
The ADS welcomes these developments and hopes to assist those societies that want to provide online access to resources. Though not in a position to undertake large-scale digitisation, the ADS is well placed to provide a safe long-term home for digital resources, so has recently launched a new policy to foster collaboration with archaeology societies.
