The ADS is pleased to announce an addition to the AHDS Guides to Good Practice Series: CAD: A Guide to Good Practice. The guide is now online at http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/project/goodguides/cad. The paper edition is due in time for Christmas!
Written by Harrison Eiteljorg II, Kate Fernie, Jeremy Huggett and Damian Robinson the guide is relevant to researchers in many disciplines. Computer aided design (CAD) files and 3-D CAD models comprise important components of archives that cannot be reproduced or distributed easily on paper. The guide has a description of CAD software; a discussion of the uses of CAD; descriptions of data capture and manipulation methods; good practice with the software, and advice about archival practices. CAD is a fundamental technology for other applications such as imaging, geographic information systems and virtual reality, so the guide is relevant for many different types of computer application.
