The aim of this tutorial is to help you read academic texts more efficiently and more effectively. Specifically, you will be presented with information on:

• Using references and reading lists
• Selecting and accessing appropriate sources of information
• Following arguments and understanding how ideas have been put together
• Using what you have read to generate your own ideas

Objectives

By the end of this tutorial you will have:

• Practiced formatting references
• Learnt how to use a reading list
• Located books using your library's online search index
• Evaluated the appropriateness of a range of texts for a given question
• Practiced a variety of reading techniques
• Identified key words in a text that influence how you understand it
• Used what you have read to evaluate academic arguments
