E-Book Introduction
David Brookshaw

The E-Book contained within this website makes up Book One of the Upper Tisza Project, out of a projected Eight. It contains the introduction to the project, the information pertaining to fieldwalking methods and the results and interpretations of one of the three fieldwalking Blocks.

In early 2004, work is expected to begin on Book Two, which will cover the other two fieldwalking Blocks and change all of the individual site records to the detailed form used by five sites in the present E-Book (see later). A non-Framed version of the website will be implemented at this time as well.

Parts Three - Eight will follow, at an expected rate of one Part every three to four months.

Note on accents and minimum browser versions

Throughout this site, the text uses the correct Hungarian spelling of proper names for geographical features, sites and individuals. Some of the accents used are not present in the ANSI character set, and are created in the text by means of Unicode. As such, users of older browsers than Internet Explorer 6, Netscape Navigator 6. Opera 6 or Mozilla for Windows-based Browsers or Internet Explorer 5 or Netscape 5 for Mac OS 9 may experience difficulties displaying a minority of these characters.

As a test, if the following characters all display correctly, then your browser is capable of displaying them in the text.

Site navigation

Within the UTP, sections of text are numbered as follows;

Book, (Block - only for certain Books), Chapter, Section, Subsections

So, for example, Section 2.I.2.3.2 refers to Part 2, Block 1, Chapter 3, Section 2. Block numbers are given in Roman Numerals, as they are not used in some Books and Book 2 contains chapters without a Block designation - 1.3.2 refers to Part 1, Chapter 3, Section 2 not Part 1, Block 3 Chapter 2.

For ease of use, all such section references within the text have been made hyperlinks to those sections. In some places, references exist to chapters that will be published in Book 2 of the E-Book development and so are not active links yet.

Tables and Figures are all numbered sequentially in the style 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and so on. The initial 1 refers to their publication in Book 1 of the E-Book: later publishing will use different prefixes.

A full list of Chapters and Sections can be found here. The Bibliography and lists of Tables and Figures make up Chapters 6, 7 and 8 of Part 1.

Every page of the text contains forward and backward links, to allow the E-Book to be read in order.

Hypertext

References to other parts of the E-Book text are links to those parts (e.g. "Section 1.1").

All references to Tables are linked to that Table's appearance in the text (e.g. "Table 1.1").

All bibliographic references are linked to that publication's entry in the bibliography (e.g. "Chapman, 2000").

All references to Figures open a new window containing the image file in question (e.g. "Fig. 1.1").

All references to individual sites open a new window containing condensed information about that site (e.g. "Újtikos 001"). Five sites have been selected for more complete information pages - Polgár 001, Polgár 038, Polgár 046, Polgár 060 and Tiszavasvári 030. In Book 2 of the UTP, all site pages will be in this more detailed format.
