Archaeological Records of Europe - Networked Access |
| ARENA Home Page | Aims and Objectives | |
This ARENA activity is aimed in the first instance at professional archivists working with digital archaeological material. In the long term however, it is hoped to have relevance for the academic community and general public. The latter activity is of course the ultimate aim of the project, the dissemination of data regarding key archaeological cultural heritage archives for academic research use and for public consumption. It is hoped that this activity will also have relevance for other cultural disciplines, for example the Performing Arts Data Service (PADS) and the Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) in the UK and one of the ARENA collaborative partners in Romania the Institute for Cultural Memory (cIMeC).
A key activity for the ARENA partners is to identify and make available a number of important archaeological archives and cultural heritage data sets to the academic community and general public. These resources will be selected for international significance and a wide European public interest. Particular emphasis will be given to themes where the partners have a critical mass of archives relating to a particular period or European culture.
This activity will provide direct experience of the preparation and documentation of digital archives for each of the project partners. It will also promote the use of digital data amongst the academic community and will enable access to the results of archaeological fieldwork of international significance.
The content of this project does not necessarily reflect the position of the European Community, nor does it involve any responsibility on the part of the European Community.
